about

On the 2018 “Vilsna andars boning” (‘Abode of lost spirits’), Erik Gärdefors sought to convey his sonic melancholia in a more austere and minimalistic manner than with any of his previous efforts. Heavily infused with traditional Swedish folk, the EP is about our dreams, heritage, and largely forgotten past.

Using only acoustic instruments, Erik captures the same feeling that permeates his metal-based records. This penchant for leaving his characteristic imprint regardless of musical expression is the key to Erik’s success across multiple music genres. Since its 2011 conception, Grift has released prestigious splits with contemporary metal greats like Saiva and Drudkh. Furthermore, Erik’s acoustic solo performances are regularly billed alongside leading neofolk acts such as Sangre de Muerdago, Nebelung, and Wolcensmen. At the time of this announcement, Grift’s metal line-up is preparing for the Lights of Oblivion autumn tour with Panopticon.

To commemorate the release of its spiritual and musical successor EP, “Vilsna andars utmark” (‘Hinterland of lost spirits’), Nordvis are now making this sold-out seven-inch available again.

Erik Gärdefors commented:

The two acoustic songs on “Vilsna andars boning” relate to Kinnekulle, the mountain whose nature, folklore and traditions are always present in Grift. Mostly, I wanted to highlight the mountain as a metaphor for something unwavering and constantly enticing – a mirage leading to imagination and escapism. The cover shows a mid-19 th-century lithograph of Kinnekulle by F.C. Kierschou. I hope this motif, along with my music, will help you dream yourself away for a while.

As usual, I created everything by myself – but Dísa from Draugurinn contributed some blowing horns, and I.K. from House of Inkantation helped me with the layout. I’m pleased the EP has been re-pressed so I can share these black ballads with you again. I’m also looking forward to performing them live in various appropriate contexts.
